I did try to knit my niece some socks but, the yarn wasn't the color I liked so, I ripped them apart. Now I am trying to decide if I need to knit her socks right now or not. I think I am going to paint her some yarn for her socks, I don't like what I have around here right now.

I know the hubby is shaking his head thinking...you have 4 roomfuls of yarn, you crazy woman! Yes, I do but, it isn't right for what I want to knit. As any knitter knows, this is a perfectly sane answer and our reasoning is sometimes skewed!

I haven't even wanted to sew. I am in limbo right now where crafting is concerned. Then I discovered some new crafting ideas. Yes, something bright and pretty has caught my eye, just trying to find the time and the money to craft these ideas, that is the big issue. I haven't even beaded in ages.

I want to make myself a dress to wear over my swimsuit, I have to cut the pattern out and get it ready for serging and sewing. Hubby bought me a beginners serger for my birthday. I am no way an expert on sewing since I am self taught but, I decided I wanted to try out a serger to see how it worked and how it will help me with my quilting. No, I haven't had time to finish all of the ones I started. I have a few left to finish.
I am in the middle of the million pillow case challenge. I entered in my DAR chapter and we are sewing for a great cause. I am working on my pillowcases.

I do have something on my knitting needles, a scarf for one of my many nieces, I haven't had time to sit down and work on it. Other things have occupied my time, a swimming pool that is green, slowly cutting down a pineapple guava bush that has long since worn out it's welcome, and then a crepe myrtle that needs a nice hair cut. Plus doing my chores.

I have taken the time at night to sit down and bead, it helps me relax and be able to sleep. I was noticing my sleep was being disrupted by life and I can't have that, I need that sleep. Plus, my stress had more than doubled and my doctor changed my bp meds to another one which gave me a nasty rash. I am back to my old meds.
We are also changing out all the cfl bulbs in the house as we can afford to do it, we are changing to LEDs since I read an article about how bad those cfls truly are for the environment and for us as well. Out they are going. We are planning on recycling them at the local home store where they have bins for them. Two boxes need to go. I guess next pay check will include getting another box and the pricey ones will be for all of the recessed lighting we have in our home.

I had bought a Ninja 4 in 1 cooker and I love the thing. Thank goodness for ez pay. I love this item, it saves me from cranking up the stove and heating up the whole kitchen. I have noticed I am cooking more since I bought the thing. I also have been making more salads for us. I buy the items I need from the store and make my own, so much cheaper than the local salad restaurant that charges about $20 for a salad, I kid you not.

I guess if people are willing to spend that much on a salad and also on coffee they will keep charging it. I won't pay that for a cup of coffee, I have Honduran coffee in my house. I had brought some back with me from our trip to Roatan and I fell in love with it. So good! Best cup of coffee I have ever had.

Will I go back to Roatan? Yes, in a heart beat. We are going back this year on vacation. Have you ever found the only place you ever want to go back to? We did. It was so beautiful and so relaxing. Very nice people, too. If you scuba dive or snorkel, this is the place for you, if not, you won't like it.

I know it has been some time since I have sat down and posted anything. Loads of changes in my life. Number one on the menu is that I am rethinking Drooling Over Yarn, the business. Etsy is way over crowded and nothing sells. So, I am thinking of what to do about this. I might end up going rogue and getting my own website. I have been thinking about this one for a while.
Then there is the problem of I am not really interested in yarn right now. Nope, don't want to see it, don't want to dye it, don't want to paint it.

The last thing I made was a pair of socks for a niece. She loves them. She tells me about them all of the time. I like this attitude of hers about her socks. I have no patience or the will to knit anyone a pair of socks and then find out they have given them away. Excuse me? I spent all my time and effort for you to give them away. I don't think so, they are permanently off the sock list.

Anyway, I am not interested in yarn right now.

What have I been doing with my time? I have been quilting. I made myself a quilt about a year or so ago and I realized that I really like making quilts. I had been wanting to make one ever since my first gift of one by my Aunt. She made me and my sisters one to share. I have that quilt upstairs. It is mine. I love it. Then in came the requests as soon as I finished that first one and I ignored them until I made my second one. I showed it off to my sister, and then she tells me that my nephew will be going away to college this coming fall and I knew I had to make him something from home. Then I decided his little brother needed one, too. I have a pile of tops that have to be finished. I am currently working on one. I even sold my first one recently. I was shocked! It was a custom order but, I did it and I was paid for it. It wasn't much but, it gave me inspiration that my craft can pay. I am not doing it as a job, I am making quilts because I love it. I would love to be able to make a king sized one but, I do not have the cash for a long arm quilting machine. I would have to go into business to pay for one. I do not want to do that.

Mostly I have been dealing with Percy, our Schnoodle, or Total Nightmare doggy. My Napoleon had to be put down and then my Bootsy had to be put down. Their doggy bodies just couldn't go anymore so, we knew it had to be done. So, we put them down within months of each other. Ody was lost with out both of them so, we knew we had to go and get another dog. We rescued Percy and now we know why they didn't ask for background information, they wanted to get rid of him. He has his moments of sweetness and then he becomes Destructo, the dog that destroys everything. Our back yard is littered with crap he has destroyed. We have to take the trash can back there and just start picking it all up. My fire pot, destroyed, my pool tools, destroyed, he is destructive.

He even caught and killed two rats in the back yard. So, he is earning his keep somewhat. Gary had been trying to catch the one rat for about a year or so and sure enough, Percy managed to get 2 and we didn't know about the second one. He is a puppy, yet. I am impressed by this.
I am making myself another one for the couch, and then I am going to make one for a birthday present. The birthday present is going to be a complete surprise, I think.

I am also knitting myself a pair of mittens. They are a much needed pair since I donated my mittens to a needy child. This year, I will not be knitting for charity since my hand won't let me. I will try to knit when I can. I know I want a new pair of socks for Winter. Since our almanac has predicted that we will have a harsh one, I know new socks will be needed.

I have also started making my own body butters. The girl who made all my lotions, creams, and balms, quit the business and I was forced to go find an alternate source. I decided to try my hand at it and well, I found out that I can make butters that heal my skin so nicely. I hate cracked skin. It is the worst. So, the body butters are doing the trick in keeping my skin nice and soft. I love that.

I wish I could upload my photos from vacation but, this software will not work for me. I have tried on three different occasions. I might have to move my blog to another place. Not sure if it will work or not. Go figure.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889938043048042447.post-59081729206070854592015-06-22T08:34:00.002-07:002015-06-22T08:34:19.263-07:00Summer, No Knitting Involved!Right now, I am not knitting a thing. My right hand is so screwed up it isn't funny! I can't even stand to hold my tablet. My fingers have been going numb. Not sure if it is the diabetes or the carpal tunnel finally demanding that it be fixed. I know the arthritis is bad in it. I have been dealing with that, too.

I want to knit socks for my charity knitting project. I look at the yarn, I look at the needles and tell myself, maybe another day. Sad.

I have been hitting the waterpark weekly. I missed last week since it was raining and Tropical storm Bill decided to peruse through the state. What kills me about this storm is the weather and the news hyped it up to be a category 5 hurricane with all of their warnings and panicking. Excuse me...what is wrong with these people it was just a tropical storm, no hurricane. They caused a panic with all the people from other states living here and the grocery stores were packed for all of the people going crazy. I stayed home and didn't buy anything. My sister managed to get herself into panic mode, too. I have some bottled water, I keep it for my trips to the water park. I knew it would just be wind, rain, and some lightning, the usual stuff. We get more winds coming off of that prairie than we did during Bill. My niece, had some trees blown down but, they were young and they haven't had much rain so, the root system hadn't developed properly, yet.

I am waiting to see what happens when we get a proper hurricane and all of these people from other states start freaking out. Oh my word! It is going to be interesting. Basically, after a hurricane down here, you sweat, find the coolest spot you can, and wait for the power to come on. You cook everything in the fridge first and then cook the stuff in the deep freeze. If you don't have a gas stove, you learn to cook on your bbq pit. Buy a cast iron skillet, it comes in handy during these times. If you are able to afford one, buy a gas generator or one of those natural gas ones that hooks up to the main line of your gas to your home. I want one of those. I told the hubby, that would be awesome. It would power all of the appliances and I could be happy for a while. No a/c though so, that would freaking suck but, it could power some fans and that would help. My sister's neighbor installed one. Then again he plans to live in his home forever.

Today I am doing laundry, ugh! I had to get up this morning and go water my plants and my tomatoes. My tomatoes have a rat in them and he is destroying the whole bed of them. I really don't think we are going to get any tomatoes this year with that damn thing in there. I am going to have to set up some traps to get him out of there. Damn varmint!

I have been trying to play catch up on my chores. I haven't been feeling like doing much of anything at all. We had to go to San Antonio to visit my mother in law and give her her Mother's day present. It was a nice visit with her. I wish it could have been a bit longer but, there was a huge weather cell coming in and we didn't want to be on the road when it hit.

Yesterday, I was a couch potato although I did cook supper and made beef stew, it was so good. It was a simple recipe and I have left overs. Tonight is left over night. I am not cooking. Usually he is pretty good about not making me cook on the weekends. I like that break. Last night, I decided to use up one of the packages of beef shoulder steaks in the fridge. The other package is in the freezer. It worked out nicely to cut the steaks into stew meat and it went over well with the dogs, too. They had some over their kibble. Percy is starting to get bigger. He is still lean but, he is getting taller. He needs some fat on his frame, yet and I am trying to figure out how to do that. We might have to give him some kibble that has more fat in it. Although we do feed him a salmon based kibble with no grains in it. My older boys couldn't handle the grains and when they both passed we decided to keep the corgi on the same stuff since he is 6 and that is usually when the allergies show up. Not going through that crap again. No thank you. So the corgi hasn't had grains since he was 2. Percy hasn't had them since he has been here with us.

I made homemade pimento cheese the other day and it has been sitting in my fridge for a couple of days getting all yummy! I love good pimento cheese, bad pimento cheese will turn you off of it for a long time. It is easy to make and man, when you do it right, it is fantastic!

I took a bag of shredded mild cheddar cheese, half a bag of sharp shredded cheddar cheese, lots of Kraft mayo and 1 teaspoonful of pimentos, mix it all together and let it sit covered in the fridge for a couple of days, to meld. Then mix it up, slap some on some bread, and enjoy! I have tried it with other mayo and the Kraft mayo is what tastes best to me. If you are a Duke's fan, then use it. I have never had it and I love the Kraft mayo. I have no idea what the measurement of the mayo is, I put in enough to get it all together. Keep adding until you have the consistency you desire.

I know that some people have no idea what pimento cheese is...a Southern delicacy! I had a really good one at a funeral. I forgot to ask the ladies serving who made it and what her recipe was. I had been searching all of my cookbooks for a recipe and some of them had no clue and then I found one in a Southern Living cookbook and tried it out. The mayo was all wrong and then I decided to use the Kraft and that was it, her recipe uses the Kraft. That creaminess was present, it is fantastic!

Last night, I was reading in bed and I heard a distinct crash downstairs. I looked at the hubby and asked if he heard it, yep, he did and so down the stairs we both went. Sure enough, the cats had killed off a saucer to my fiestaware. Damn cats! Between the hubby and the cats, I am losing dinnerware quickly. I might have to go looking for replacements to my set. They discontinued the cinnabar and so, I went with cobalt as my new choice. I have cinnabar serving pieces. So, now I have the cobalt dinnerware. I guess we will see how long they keep that one. sigh!

Cast on 54 stitches with US 3 needles, be sure to not twist your stitches as you knit the first row, otherwise, rip them all off the needle and start again. At the join for the other needle, watch out for the twist or repeat the previous step.

Join your yarn and start knitting, this sock does not incorporate any form of ribbing. Keep knitting until you decide that you want to start your heel flap. I usually try to do about 5 or 6 inches of leg for my socks. Sometimes, I get bored and decide to just knit 4 inches.

Heel flap on needle 1:
Knit across row 1.
K4, purl, k4 to end the row.
Keep repeating these two rows until you have 9 garter stitch ridges on each side of the heel flap.

Heel turn:
Knit 17 stitches, ssk, turn.
Slip the 1st stitch and purl 7 stitches, p2tog, turn
Slip the 1st stitch and knit 7 stitches, ssk, turn.
Keep repeating these two stitches until you are left with 9 stitches on your needles, Knit across the 9 stitches and start picking up stitches on each of the garter stitch ridges on the sides. You will have 9 new picked up stitches and pick up one more stitch at the top before you pick up needle 2 and knit across the 27 stitches that have been sitting unworked while you have been working on your heel flap. Pick up 10 stitches with needle 1 on the other side of the heel flap working downwards.
Knit two rounds.
Gusset:
Knit 1, ssk, knit until three stitches from the end on needle 1, k2tog, k1.
You should have 27 stitches on needle 1.

Foot.
Keep knitting in the round with both needles until you get to your foot size, try the sock on. When your sock is long enough, it should reach to the bottom of your pinky toe. This is how I size my socks I wear an 8.5US women's.
Toe:
This is a simple toe and it works out really well for every single pair of socks that I have knit. I have knit many pairs.
Needle 1: knit 1,ssk, knit until 3 stitches from the end, k2tog, k1.
Needle 2: knit 1, ssk, knit until 3 stitches from the end, k2tog, k1.
Knit plain around, and repeat these two decreasing stitches every other round being sure to knit a plain round in between the decreasing rounds. Now, count your stitches on your needles and when you get to 34 stitches on the needles total, so, 17 stitches on each needle, then decrease every round. If you think your sock isn't long enough, then wait until you think it fits well enough and then start decreasing every row until you get a minimal amount left on your needles, I usually end mine with 10 stitches total, cut the yarn, and then weave in all stitches via Kitchner stitch.
Enjoy!

I have worked this single gusset decrease sock several times and with the high instep people I knit for, they love it. I have a high instep and I actually love this one stitch gusset.
The heel is a Dutch heel and very simple to knit. It is my go to heel.

The heel flap with the k4 on each end, to mark the end of the k4, place a stitch marker, otherwise, it will make you crazy! I always add on a stitch marker to help me remember to do my final k4 on the purl side of the flap. It also makes it so much easier to pick up stitches with this decorative edge.

If you have issues picking up stitches with a needle, then please by all means use a crochet hook in size e or f. I used to use one before I had been doing a lot of crochet and realized that the same wrap stitch in crochet could be used with a knitting needle. I also love to anchor my heels with two rounds of plain knitting before I start the gusset. No holes this way and it also has more give.

If you have any questions, please leave me a comment and I will try to get back to you. I know sometimes people just want to knit a plain sock with no ornamentation and I was asked to write my pattern down.

The US 3 circular needles need to have a 24 inch cord. I use Addi turbo rockets, which are great because they have super sharp points which really get under the stitch. They are most excellent on lace. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889938043048042447.post-33801621507314152892015-03-20T10:02:00.002-07:002015-03-20T10:02:41.178-07:00More Drama I had hurt my right knee last month and I put it in my brace. Well, it seems I hurt it worse than I had thought. I took myself off to the doctor Tuesday per the hubby's recommendation and found out that I have torn my meniscus. Oh boy! So, I am on crutches until the swelling goes down. I have muscle relaxers and I have an anti-inflammatory pill.

I am working on knitting hats right now for charity. I will need a bunch of items for the kids this year. We talked about it last night and we are donating to one school. I am hoping that the kids will have Christmas presents this year, again. They are so poor, last year when we sent boxes of goodies, I was sent a letter back that stated the kids had Christmas presents for the first time. That statement brought tears to my eyes.

In other news, my sweetheart, my Bootsy was put down on March 17th. He was so old and his poor old body couldn't do it anymore. He had a strong will to live but, that just didn't work for his body. He was 14 years old. Gary had to deal with it since I was at my doctor's appointment. He brought him home and we buried him next to his best friend, Napoleon. So, they are both out there in the back yard. Ody is lonely. We are looking for a puppy from a shelter in Austin. We hope they give us a call and let us know if we are acceptable to them as parents.

Today is Ody's 6th birthday! My little boy is growing up. He is something else. I love that little doggy. It doesn't seem like 6 years with him. I remember holding that wee bit of nothing in my arms when he was a puppy and my heart melted for the little guy. It was love at first sight.

I have to go to garage sales to find a play pen for our new puppy. We will get one eventually if the adoption doesn't work out with the Austin shelter. The play pen will be in the family room with pee pads lining the base. We have been through this before. Ody scaled the walls on his play pen. He was so freaking cute with that chubby little belly and those itty bitty stumpy legs.

Another view of my quilt top, in progress.

I love how well the top of my quilt is coming along. I have more strips to sew onto the big piece and then I will be measuring to see if it is the right width. I need 45 inches wide and 60 inches long. I am using a fussy cut ruler for this project.

I chose pink, black and white because they are such great colors together. I found really cute fat quarters on Zulily and most of them came from Adorn It! The pink sparkly damask fabric came from Hobby Lobby. If you want really cute cotton fabrics, that is the place to hit. This will be my throw quilt to snuggle up under on the couch. I was reading a quilting magazine and their advice, which I loved, was..."keep your first quilt so, you can go back and look at how much you have improved." I loved that advice. I am going to keep this one and then go on to another one after this one. There may be a bunch of patch work quilts floating around the family until I get really comfortable and branch out to the really fancy ones.

I taught myself to sew. I haven't had any classes or anything. I just sat down one day and figured it out. I think I am doing pretty well for someone who hasn't had a teacher.

I decided to make a quilt when I had the tennis elbow from vacuuming too much with my DC 59. I still love that thing but, I don't get to use it as much since the arm can't handle it. So, I took my sewing machine out and started to sew. It worked really well to fill my days up and keep my creative juices flowing. I am so glad that I did. I am learning new things every day.

I will keep everyone posted on my progress with my quilt.

I so can't wait to finish them. If you want a copy of the pattern, it is for sale in my Etsy shop. The pattern is for experienced chart readers and lace knitters. If you want to bead the sock, then you will need some experience with a steel crochet hook and the pattern requires size 6/0 beads. I highly recommend Dyna-Mites because you get a lot for your money and they are super cheap on Fire Mountain Gems.
The beads on this sock are cobalt blue with a rainbow finish. I also knit this sock in Clementine with root beer colored beads with a rainbow finish. There are some really cool seed beads out there and some of them are expensive! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the ones that are gold over glass....$30 for those. Uh, I can't do that. My hubby wouldn't understand that one at all.

I decided to offer the sock pattern up for sale only in my shop. More patterns will be coming soon. I have to write down the ones that I have knit recently and only have my charts and notes on them. One pair I am wearing right now, is the Jolie sock. I did a test knit of the charts and I need to write it down before I offer it up for sale.

After I finish this sock, I have plans to knit my niece, Maribeth a pair of socks out of Beauty Queen Gone Bad. I painted her a special skein of the super wash merino/nylon. I am hoping she is going to love her socks.

Next on the list will be a pair of Jolie socks for Ms. Jolie herself. I custom dyed the yarn pink and I am using a silk eggshell colored seed bead for her socks. No beads for Maribeth's because I am sick of beads right now. Too many pairs knit with beads. 7 pairs to be exact. Oh my word! No more.

My sister showed me her socks today that I had knit for her. I totally forgot that I knit her a pair recently. That should tell you how many socks I have knit. I can't keep up anymore.

I am working on my first quilt, ever. It is coming out really nice. I am working on getting the top sewn together. Then I will put the batting down and next will be dealing with the backing. My patchwork quilt is in the colors, pink, white, and black. I found really cute fat quarters on Zulily. They have fabric and sewing machines on there every now and again. Janome basic sewing machines in colors for $62.99 was on one of the last sales. I don't need another sewing machine but, that is such a great price for such a great machine. It is more of a starter machine. I love the Janome line up. I have a DC1050 and I love that machine. I came from sewing with a Singer and that damn thing clacked no matter how much I oiled it. It drove me around the bend. I sold it to my niece for $20. She was using it to make all sorts of things. When she gets better, she can buy herself a better machine. I love the drop in bobbins on the Janome. If you have ever had to fight with a front loading Singer, then I feel your pain. I hated that part of the whole operation.

Pictures will follow of my quilt top when I find the time to take some of it. I found my camera.

I need to dye some single colors of yarn for the patterns that will be coming up for the shop. I am so behind right now. It is crazy how things are going around here. I went shopping today with my sister and bought my nephews some Easter candy, one loves chocolate, so, he is so easy to buy for. His brother loves super sour and super sour is hard to find these days. I found him some War Heads and some Super Sour bubble gum. I am hoping that will work out for him. My niece was so easy, I bought her a cowgirl hat, and I filled it with candy. She loves her hat and she loved her candy. The biggest hit is the chicken that clucks and lays jelly beans. My sister had to buy more jelly beans for the thing. I saw it and knew she would love the thing. If you want interesting Easter candy, check out the Cracker Barrel near you. They have candy from when I was a kid. Dr. Pepper Hubba Bubba bubblegum. I haven't seen it in years, they have it. Or at least the one here in Cypress does.
Here are the pictures that I promised. I am almost finished with the first one. I am on the toe section right now. I decided last night to sit down and work on this sock.

The yarn is a custom color, aqua green, I knit this pair on US 3 Addi turbo Rockets, 24 inch cables. The beads are 6/0 and applied with a size 9 steel crochet hook. The yarn is a merino/silk sock. The heel is one of my favorites, a Dutch heel and the heel flap is stockinette stitch with a knit lead in.

I have a Selbu mitten on another set of needles, they are wood so, the points aren't sharp and this works out well. I am also taking time to work on my first quilt.

New for me...glasses! Reading glasses only! I couldn't read a box at the grocery store so, I knew something was up. I went ahead and found an eye doctor, and managed to get the hubby an appointment as well. We both need reading glasses, he is less blind than I am. So, I found myself a package of 5 for cheap on Amazon. They work well. This means I have a pair in each room where I need to read.

I work on the mitten in front of the tv at night. I try to work on my quilt during the day. After several false starts, I finally found my niche. I swear, that rotary cutter was a nightmare at first, I know you are thinking, how can that be since it looks like a pizza cutter? Uh, a pizza cutter is easy compared to getting used to this thing. I finally think I have it down pat. I am using a square fussy cutter for my pattern. My batting is 48 inches by 60 inches. I am using polyester batting for my first one and will save the expensive cotton batting for a bigger one down the road.

I had planned to make each of my dogs a quilt but, since the loss of my hound dog, that blew that out of the water. I lost interest and now, I am making a lap quilt for myself. I have also realized how damn picky I am when it comes to the colors in my quilt and the fabric choices out there. My first one is going to be pinks, blacks and whites. I am searching for my perfect backing fabric next. That is the hard part for me. I am looking for the perfect one.

The Selbu mitten is going for charity. I have started my charity knitting for the year. I hit a sale on sock yarn on Zulily and decided to use it for my charity knitting. I have one hat completed and now I am working on the mitten. After the mittens, I am thinking, a neck cozy out of stash yarn. I have way too much yarn and I need to use it. So, the kids who are needy will be getting items from me out of it.

I have plans to knit a custom pair of socks for a dear friend's daughter. I want to knit a pair for my niece, Maribeth. She needs a new pair. The pair of the needles right now, are going to my niece, Kate.

With the cold the way it is these days, one minute it is warm down here and the next, cold. Freaky weird weather for Texas. Seriously! I have my tomato plants which I grew from seed, they have to be hardened and I can't set them out until all freeze warnings are no more. I need to get these babies into the ground. I also have some basil and parsley that I planted. I love fresh flat leaf parsley. It is really fantastic in tempura. It makes it creamy tasting when it is fried in tempura batter. The hubby and I love it.

I want to see if I can knit projects for charity out of a bin of yarn at a time. I want to empty a bin and then move on to another bin. I tried to see if I could do this in a month, it didn't work. So, I am going to try and see if I can do it and how long it takes for me to use up the yarn in one bin.

I need to knit myself a new pair of mittens, I can't seem to find mine. I lose everything. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889938043048042447.post-67433805103792778912015-01-06T14:55:00.000-08:002015-01-06T14:55:48.800-08:00Sock Knitting Due to Freaking Cold FeetI have been trying to sit down and work on my newest sock, I am knitting a pair for myself. Right now, I am wearing two mismatched wool socks. I have no idea where their mates are so, I am desperate to keep my feet warm. Hence the mismatched socks. I decided to start knitting when this problem came to light.

So, I started on the Meagan sock with beads. I thought my yarn was slightly off and then realization hit, it wasn't my favorite merino/silk sock yarn...nope, it is some other blend and for the life of me, I can't even begin to guess what it is, I dyed it up in a beautiful periwinkle color and no idea what is in it. There might be some angora in it. I am not sure. Don't you hate when you dye a yarn up and can't remember what the fiber content is? Am I the only one this happens to?

I have been dealing with antibiotics. I was at the ER last week Monday with my current woe. My doctor was booked solid and I was in agony. So, I told the hubby we were going to deal with it. I couldn't take it any longer.

I sleep most of the day away on this particular antibiotic and the current ailment was kicking my ass. I have never seen the like before. I will say that I do not want this back...ever! It literally sucked the life out of me for a while. I am getting better and I am trying to work around it. I do two house cleaning items a day and that is it for me right now. Nothing more. Sad but, true.

I haven't given up on knitting, yet. I am still an avid participant with it. I am not buying any yarn this year, I am using stash yarn. What I have is it. I have way too much yarn as it is and I have plans for it. I think I am going to start knitting mittens with some of it for the unfortunate children that I collect items for and send them along for this year's campaign. I also have plans for hats and neck warmers. I am not a fan of the scarf, too much material and way overrated. I might even delve into gloves. I just know that there are a lot of needy kids with nothing. Maybe this will help those kids.

I wish I could sit down and spin because I have a lot of fiber that needs to become yarn. No idea when the arm will heal for me to sit and do that. It was getting better and then I over did it, again. Grr! Isn't that the way it goes? I thought it was healing and took off the ugly brace...bad idea.

Hopefully, I will have enough cuff of the sock done soon, and I will take pictures for everyone to see.

Have a wonderful week and happy knitting!
It still freaking hurts. Grr! I am about to start knitting slowly to get myself back into shape. I have a pair of socks I want to knit. The yarn is in the bathroom and it is my yarn. Yeah, I should be knitting my niece a pair of socks but, I deserve a new pair since I am the knitter.

I wrapped Christmas presents last night. I was going to give the hubby a new suitcase but, I decided to keep it. He has plenty of luggage. My luggage bit it on our last cruise. That was a while back.

The only problem...it is solid black. Time to add something pretty to it so, I will know it is mine. I wonder what I can paint on it to make it look like me? I have to think about it for a while.

I put the mini tree up yesterday. My Christmas tree is small since I just didn't feel like messing with a big one. The arm, and just hating having to deal with the whole moving of furniture to get it in front of the window. Sucks! The little one was harder to decorate than the big one. On a big one, I can put the ornaments where ever and it works...the little one, I had to look and move ornaments so, like colors wouldn't be next to each other. It turned out really well.

We are in the funky season zone over here, one day hot, the next cold. It sucks! We aren't turning on the heat unless it gets super cold. So, we have a nice quilt on the bed. Thankfully we have cats who love to sleep on the bed with us. Nothing like a warm cat pressed up against me in the cold. I am not telling the cat that I love her being pressed up against me because a hot cat in the summer is another story. Ugh!

I am sick of cold feet. I sleep in wool socks in the winter. I need a new pair, too. Time to knit some for me. I want to knit one of my patterns that I have written recently. I deserve something beautiful. I also think I want to enter my socks into a contest. I have been saying this for years but, I think this year, I am going to do it. Let's see what I can win. :)

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful rest of the week. If I don't post before Christmas again...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. My hubby took our old hound dog in to the vet, we knew it wasn't going to be a good prognosis, he had some serious health issues and we knew it was time. Napoleon gave up on Thursday night, he stopped eating, he was having trouble breathing. I was petting his soft ears and let him know how much I loved him.

Hubby took him in and the vet said his heart murmur had really gotten worse, 6 being the worst, his was at 5. His back legs no longer worked, he had some spine issues. He was 13 years old. So, Gary called me and said he was having him put down. It was hard for both of us and it was better for him, no more pain, no more suffering. He had been through major surgery to have a ruptured lump removed, he then had pancreatitis and we had to nurse him back to health. He wasn't living a good life, not for a dog. No more of his favorite foods, no more kibble with any form of fat, he had to live on diet dog food.

He lived for Taco Bell. Do not ask me why this dog loved it but, he did. He would drool when we had it. He would sit there and try to dog-natize us. Those big brown eyes just staring at us.

I miss his singing. He sang to me every night. I miss that and so does Ody, our corgi. He and Napoleon were buddies since Boots is old and grouchy. They spent a lot of time together in the back yard.

I look in his home each morning expecting to see him snoring away. Sigh!

I love you my old faithful hound dog. You will be missed. I guess it will be the only like it on an airplane.

I am still dealing with the damn tennis elbow. I am not supposed to use my arm. I use that arm for everything. So, it is still bothering me and besides the lectures the hubby gives me about it...that is making me crazy! Try to not use an arm for a while, it is essential. I guess I can call the hubby to do everything for me. He doesn't have the time. So, I use the arm...big Catch 22.

So, a month ago, I bought a 2 ft fake light up Christmas tree. It was 50% off. I started looking for a tree skirt, nothing out there that I liked and when I did find one, expensive. I don't do expensive, I love to bargain shop. I refuse to pay $50 for a mini tree skirt. So, I did the next best thing, I hit the fabric store and found my fabrics. I buy pretty much all of my fabric in the 1 yard increment unless I need more. I bought several fabrics in the Christmas theme and used my coupons. Love coupons! Most of my items were on sale and I came out of there pretty good. I decided to design my own tree skirt. How hard can that be?

Think tree skirt and now take an idiot, that would be me, when it came to this idea...I can't believe I did that. I even told the hubby how much of an idiot I was for even thinking of doing it that way, I made a travel pillow in Christmas fabric. Yeah, that good. I will finish sewing that one and stuff it full of fiber fill. It is pretty but, come on...what in the world was I thinking? No idea!

So, I went back and re-cut my fabric and figured it out. Sometimes it takes a while. This time it did. I finished my tree skirt. Woo! It looks fabulous on my little tree.

Another view of my first Christmas tree skirt

I have it on my sewing/craft table right now. I think it is going to live there and after I finish designing and sewing my angel, she will go on top of the tree. I bought remnant fabrics for her. I plan to take the left over fabric from the travel pillow to make her outfit. She will be a rag doll angel. I think she will be pretty and easy to sew.

I used a quilting technique for my tree skirt because I can't seem to work with bias tape. No idea how the stuff works. I am self taught at sewing. I don't even use patterns, they screw me up. I look at it and figure out how it is supposed to work. Hence the travel pillow. I even used the serging stitches that came with my Janome DC 1050 machine. Love my Janome. It sure as hell beats the Singer I learned to sew on. I don't miss the "clack, clack, clack" of that Singer. I would oil the hell out of the thing and it still made that awful noise. I gave the machine to my niece, Kate. She sews on it. She likes it. Now her older sister, I found a beginners Janome on sale and bought her that one. It is nice with it's built in stitches. I am hoping she will take the time to learn to use her machine.

I have given up on teaching them to knit. I hope they do learn to sew. It comes in handy. I have found that one out.

I have put off sewing my tree skirt and after working out the logistics of this one, I might make myself another one in another color. I have plans to use my little tree again. This year, I just do not feel like dealing with our big tree. I have no desire to mess with it. I bought some mini ornaments and I have ribbon for this tree as my garland. It should be sweet.
I do not play tennis. If I would play tennis, I would have to wear one of those little tennis skirts and I would have to book my court. That is how it works in my subdivision because it seems two women beat the hell out of each other one day with their tennis rackets fighting over a court.

I know...right?

So, I am in my own version of hell because I can't knit. No knitting and it is about to drive me around the bend. Crocheting is out since it is my right arm.

I am limited with what I can do with my right hand and arm. If I do something I am not supposed to, my fingers go numb. Great. Grocery shopping was fun today. I have to learn to not use the arm. It was painful on the way out of the store. I am glad I took the Escape, it is easy to get into and out of and it is easy to load groceries into. Love that pop up back end.

Since the corgi and I have both gained weight, today I decided was the first day of exercising outside the home. I took him on a walk. We have to start small and work our way up to the mile. The vet said he needs to weigh in at 29 pounds. I nearly fell over laughing from that one. He loves to eat. So, she told me to start out small and then work our way up to that mile. It works for me. He weighed in at 41.5 pounds. Big for a corgi.

Anyway, my tennis elbow is from vacuuming. Yep, vacuuming with my Dyson DC59 Motor head. Love that thing! Only bad thing, since it is so top heavy, it hurt the arm and elbow. Thus my problems.

The thought of me in one of those itty bitty tennis skirts...No, I don't think so. Ever! The thought of my butt hanging out, I will skip that.

For my snack, I had baby spinach, baby kale, coconut water, some frozen fruit and blended it all up in the Vitamix. That is one powerful blender. It is so freaking loud. We broke down and decided to get one last year. We had 2 blenders that we received for our wedding 14 years ago and they pretty much sucked. So, we pawned them off onto my sister. Told her she could always garage sale them. She used them once and garage saled them and bought a better blender from the proceeds.

My sister tells me I am weird for liking kale. I have to have leafy greens these days. They have to be part of my diet. Doctor's orders. I do like them but, I generally don't cook with them. So, I am using the Vitamix to have my leafy greens in a more palatable way.

I am waiting for pomegranate season. I love those things! I get one and snack away on it. It is a nice treat to get one.
The yarn is a merino/silk I hand dyed, it is called Clementine. This is my test knit. I am testing the pattern and I will be writing it down, soon. It will be for sale in my shop. The finished pair of socks will be for sale in the shop as well. I have to finish the second one. I am no longer knitting socks for free for family and friends. I am charging my rate, which will pay for the yarn and the wear and tear on my hands.

I chose to use Dyna-mites beads from Fire Mountain Gems. Love the price tag on the beads, in my ball park. The color is root beer, a rainbow transparent. I used rocailles, size 6/0. My crochet hook is a size 9 steel hook. I knit this sock on US3 addi turbo sock rockets. Love those needles, they have the sharp points and they come in my favorite cable length, 24 inches. I use 2 of them to knit socks. I had to explain that this weekend to another knitter. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that I use two needles to knit a pair of socks. I can use dpns but, my preferred method is the two needles.

I have found it is far easier to knit lace socks on two circs. It holds the work for me when I am not knitting. Love that feature. I have tried so many different needles over the years and always faithfully return to my addi turbos. Best purchase, ever. I know they are expensive but, if you knit professionally like I do, spend the money for them.
I finally finished Meagan's socks. I just need to write down my pattern. This pattern will be going up for sale in my shop.
I am currently working on another pattern. I am test knitting it right now. New things will be coming to the shop this year. I am hoping that the 2014 Fall season will offer up some enticing items for knitters.

In other news...I have been sewing pillowcases for our veterans. I have 10 of them finished and they will be headed to my DAR chapter regent, she will send them to the right people. I also have plans to sew 3 quilts for my doggies for Christmas. I hit a sale on batting and I have plenty of fat quarters in my stash to make them something nice.
I also have plans to do more sewing. I have the fabric and I am going to take the time to make more items with my sewing machine.
She is the one who inspired the Meagan sock although her Meagan socks are sparkly Meagan's. Yep, I am beading them. When I find my camera, I will go ahead and snap some pictures of them. I finished one and I need to cast on for the second one.

I am also working on an afghan for a friend's soon to be hubby. I have the yarn and started working on this thing a while back and hubby said no, he didn't want it. He has his big blue afghan he snuggles up in. So, I started showing off the picture and found someone who wanted it. He doesn't know about it. My friend approved it. I am guessing he should like it.

I slipped and fell onto my hands and knees Wednesday night. Always so much fun to be me. I was walking into my kitchen to refill my glass of water, when unbeknownst to me, I hit a patch of water on my tile floor, I didn't break the glass even thought I dropped it, and I landed on my hands and knees. I am in a knee brace from my thigh to my shin. I broke out the big boy. This time around it is the right knee instead of the left knee. I can't stand to put any sort of pressure on it.

Since I am forced to take it easy on myself, I get to work on all sorts of projects...hence the sock and the afghan. I also will be dyeing some sock yarn for another niece who wants sparkly socks. I asked her what color she wants...no painted yarn for this project...."aqua" was the answer. Well, that doesn't help me much so, I asked, which one? Aqua blue or aqua green. She replied with "aqua blue". Okay. So, I will be knitting aqua blue socks. I am working on turquoise socks right now. What Kate doesn't realize is that her sister's socks are darker than in the pictures. I will be using a darker bead on Kate's socks. I just have to design her socks. I am thinking about that right now. I have an idea on what I want to do. :) She will not be getting Meagan socks. Nope, I am getting sick of that pattern. I need something new.

I might even share it with my readers. It is always fun to try a new sock pattern. Something exciting. I might even share the Meagan sock.
As you can see, I am being lazy on working on this hat. I have managed a whole whopping inch and a half. The yarn is wonderful to knit with. It is a merino/silk/acrylic blend. I wound out another ball of it just in case I need to use a second ball to complete the hat.

I have managed something to show off. It will have to wait until I finish the shawl and then maybe between me starting the scarf, it may get knit on. I also have an afghan to work on and a pair of socks for my niece. I bought seed beads today for those socks. I am thinking it will look awesome to have beaded socks with lace. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889938043048042447.post-17996665049357061312014-07-16T17:38:00.004-07:002014-07-16T18:14:58.075-07:00That One Damn Tomato PlantWe have a huge bed of tomato plants this year. We have a total of 8 plants in the bed and I have one plant in a pot since we ran out of room in the bed. There is one tomato plant that hasn't done a thing. We were talking about ripping it out so, the other tomatoes can grow and get more light. Well, today when I was picking tomatoes, what do I see? That one tomato plant that was about to get ripped out of the ground is loaded with tomatoes. I couldn't believe it. It is a late bloomer. It is also a heirloom tomato that I picked up at the local home improvement store. No idea what the name of it is but, it is doing it's thing. It also likes it hot. We have had some serious heat indexes lately of 104 and more. Just plain freaking hot!

It is also fig picking time here. Since I was picking tomatoes this morning, I decided to check out the fig tree, it is loaded with unripe fruit. I have noticed the birds have snagged a few of the ripe ones but, I don't care this year since there is so much fruit on that tree. Other years, the birds eating some has really ticked me off. Not this year. My next door neighbor has mentioned that she loves eating raw figs. Well, neighbor, you are going to get some figs.

I also started working on the shawl again. I am changing to longer cords on a new set of needles. I hit the Knit Picks sale and bought needles. I decided to go ahead and get the really long cords since I am addicted to lace knitting. Now I know why my MIL is crazy for lace knitting. I hope to get this shawl finished in the next two weeks. It is time for it to be finished.

Have I finished charity hat #3? No. I haven't. I haven't been knitting. Instead, I have been spinning and checking out the beautiful fibers I have laying around. I pulled out some Mountain Meadows Camino Range Roving Domestic Wool and started to draft it. I am actually spinning it on a spindle instead of the wheel. Why you ask, the wheel is loaded with another fiber. The fiber on the wheel right now is Ashland Bay Mixed BFL 75/25 Roving. Which means that 75% is ecru colored and 25% is natural black fiber. It is cool looking and spins like butter. I have plans for it. So, that is staying on the wheel. I am finding I need more spindles and more bobbins for the wheel. I have the spindles, I just need to find them. I lose everything or put it up so, I won't lose it and I end up losing it in the end.

Anyway, the Mountain Meadows fiber is so springy and when I spin it, it is making some gorgeous yarn. I can't wait to knit something amazing out of it. I don't think I will ply it, either. I am going to keep it as a single. Not sure if I will even dye it. I love the natural color the way it is. I might change my mind at a later date.

So far it is spinning up as fingering weight. I find I can spin a lace or a fingering weight easier than I can a worsted or a bulky weight. Go figure. No idea how this came about.

I have a pair of socks I need to knit for a niece. She asked me for a new pair. I am going to be crazy by the time Christmas rolls around. I thought about making all of my presents but, I am not sure about that one this year. For some reason, I just can't get it together.
Well, any way, I shop at this one site and they sent me a reminder that my 45 points were about to expire. Okay, I guess I will go see what I can find. I found several fibers. So, I put them in my cart, they gave me my spinning club discount but, they won't let me cash in my points. I tried everything I could to use my 45 points. I would have to put in a new order but, since I am in the fiber club, I wouldn't be able to use my points. Pardon the language...how fucked up is that?

My points will be expiring because I do not need any form of yarn. I am up to my ears in yarn. I am trying to use up my stash and not buy more yarn. I am even using my stash yarn for charity knitting. I am on hat number 3.

The online store pissed me off so much that I went to another online store to get the spinning wheel part I needed. I am not a happy camper over this. Why won't they let me cash in my points and take my fiber club discount off of there? Is that too complicated? I don't need that 10% off. I just want to use my points.

I am still working on the shawl but, I am putting it aside right now to work on the charity hats. I think this year, I am going to do just hats. It may change and I might do some neck warmers. The kids seem to like those. Not sure about mittens or mitts right now.

I need to get back to painting lace weight yarns. I have had several requests but, lately I have been too lazy to deal with the heat and the dyes. It is freaking hot outside, too and it just ruins the whole day.

We have been picking tomatoes and fighting off the varmint who keeps eating our tomatoes. We think it is a squirrel. He loves to get underneath the bird and wild life netting and take out the black truffle tomatoes. I don't blame him since they are so incredible but, come on, only eating half and then leaving it. That ticks me off.

It is also fig picking time. So, I will be starting that this week. Oh the joy of it. I have a neighbor who loves them so, she is going to be getting some. We gave her fig preserves last year but, she said she would rather have them fresh. Not a problem. She can have as many as she wants.
I have the shawl which is coming along nicely. I am working on it when I can. I also had to go in for a follow up for my three month blood work check. I took along a hat that I am working on for charity. I didn't want to drag along the shawl and the chart. The hat is small and works out well.

I love the new book. I have several projects picked out from it. Then I spotted them one day, while I was perusing seed beads. I found some root beer rainbow seed beads and knew instantly what I was going to use them for and which yarn. I have a chameleon orange lace weight that has been sitting around for a while. I decided to use the unusual colored beads with the orange yarn. It should turn out well.

This week has been a visit to the vet for shots for my oldest doggy. He is 13 years old. He is my sweetie pie. Then I noticed the hound dog who is 12 years old has skin issues so, he has to go in tomorrow. He will have to have surgery to remove several large lumps. Poor old guy.

I don't know who will get the orange shawl or scarf and then I had an epiphany...I can make a scarf for charity in lace. Some child will love it, I hope.

I have a huge line of knitting to do for people. I am taking a much needed break on socks. I have one person who will get them later in the year. I am thinking of re-working her pattern. I can do that.
I started it last week. I am using one of my own hand painted lace weight yarns, this one is a bfl/silk blend in cherry. It is various shades of pink and some red. It is really pretty.

I have a new book of shawl patterns and found one that struck me as gorgeous. It involves beads and a crochet hook. I have found my comfort zone with beads. The crochet hook is the way to go since it does not weigh down the yarn as you are knitting along. It is a simple method as well.

I take my bead out of my seed bead container, take the crochet hook and place the bead onto the hook, then I grab the stitch and hook it with the crochet hook, slip the bead onto the stitch and then put it back onto my working needle. Simple and quick if everything aligns, if not, start cursing, put the bead back onto the hook, and try again.
I love the bead box. It means no fighting with the crap little bag that some bead stores use and I have to use one of my bead boxes to store the things.

Anyway, the shawl is Kodama and it is from this book, see top photo. I pre-ordered it when I received my birthday money. People know what I like, cash, gift cards, yarn, and beads...those items can never go wrong in my book. Fiber is also another thing I like...I have some fiber that I am spinning on my wheel and on one of my spindles.

I work on my shawl at night when I am sitting in front of the television. It keeps me occupied.

I made a new necklace yesterday but, I forgot one bead and so, I have to rip it apart and add the bead and then go from there.

I also made another necklace last week...my supply of necklaces is small right now, my basket of love was blown apart after Mother's Day. I let all the mom's in the family take their pick of the basket of love and needless to say, there were hardly any items left in it.
I used Czech druks, Swarovski, and other beads, that I bought recently. I found a new bead store on line that has the most amazing beads. They also sell Czech buttons, the glass ones that are really nice. I bought one of them and thought to go back and get more...uh, no more to be had. Things go quickly at this bead store.

I went to the water park last week with my hubby. I spent my day in the lazy river. It was nice. I did swim some in the lazy river and even took a turn in the wave pool. Love the wave pool. I didn't ride any slides. My left ankle was swollen and I have no idea what I did. I wrapped it for 4 days and now it is back to normal. No clue what happened with the thing. No telling with me, either.

Today I checked my pool chemicals and the water is still a bit cloudy but, not like what is was so, I went swimming for 30 minutes. I skimmed the pool for some bits of grass and some bugs and did my laps. I even used my new outdoor shower. Hubby made it for me. Love that shower. Love that man. It hooks up to the water hose but, after dealing with three previous outdoor showers....crappers all of them, I decided that it was time for something new. He took pvc pipe and fittings, a primo shower head with the hand held line on it and voila! I have a new shower. He installed a new post for the shade sail over the pool and the shower is attached to this post. He has to install the hook that will hold the shower caddy for my shampoo and my soap.

I have another pair of socks on another set of needles but, I don't want to knit socks. I want to knit lace. I also have a hat on another set of needles. Okay, two ufo's and the shawl, not bad for this knitter. It could be worse.
